Monitoring Internet usage
Two measuring approaches were used as part of this research:
Mikrotik Routerboard
A Mikrotik Routerboard 532 was used to shape and control bandwidth use between the different subnets on the network. Product details are available at
www.mikrotik.com. This device has a proprietary operating system and application built in. One of its functions is to record data traffic volumes on the basis of averages over each 5 minutes. This can be measured for the total network, or a subnet.
A sample of the output of this monitoring is shown at figure 22.
Track4Win
Track4Win is a software package designed for employee monitoring. Product
details are available at www.track4win.com . The Server part of the software
was installed on the computer which collected the usage data. The Client part
was installed on the computers being monitored. As users opened different
applications and accessed different Internet resources, the program tracks this information in detail, with timing and duration, storing it in an MS Access database.
The Server software also includes a tool for analyzing and graphing the collected data in a range of different ways.
